The Ground Hornbill,  listed as vulnerable,  has an estimated population of < 2000 in South Africa.  This population is reducing in higher density populations.

Only one chick ever survives. The second is laid up to 13 days after the first and dies of starvation.  This redundant chick  can thus be used in conservation measures.
